Low Testosterone

low testosterone informationLow Testosterone Symptoms & Treatment

Androgen Deficiency of the Aging Male (ADAM) aka andropause, a syndrome in aging men, consists of physical, sexual, and psychologic symptoms that include diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, weakness, fatigue, reduced muscle and bone mass, impaired hematopoiesis, lowered sperm count, depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, memory impairment, and reduced cognitive function.

Free testosterone levels begin to decline at a rate of 1% per year after age 40 years. It is estimated that 20% of men aged 60-80 years have levels below the lower limit of normal. However, hormone levels should not justify treatment alone. Symptoms of testosterone deficiency are required to justify treatment. Once the symptoms of “low T” are identified then two separate T levels will be obtained to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment is usually initiated after a thorough discussion of the risks and benefits of testosterone replacement based on your individual characteristics.
