Is Steam the Answer to BPH?
According to statistics, more than 3 million men are diagnosed with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) each year. BPH is more than an uncomfortable problem that can affect urine flow; it is a condition that could ultimately degrade kidney function and quality of life if not properly treated. Due to the prevalence and potentially severe nature of an enlarged prostate, numerous treatment options have been developed over the years. Depending on the degree of enlargement, treatment may vary from medication to surgery.
As a leader in the field of men’s health and urology, Dr. Shridharani has consistently been positioned at the forefront of medical advancement in this area of medicine. We are pleased to be one of the few centers in the United States to now offer Rezūm, an innovative non-surgical treatment for BPH.
What is Rezūm?
Rezūm therapy is an in-office procedure that provides one-time treatment for the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. The technique was approved by the FDA in 2015 and has demonstrated high success rates in reducing prostate size and decreasing symptoms such as:
- Difficulty starting urine flow
- Straining during urination
- Weak urine stream
- Starting and stopping urination
- Incomplete bladder emptying due to starting and stopping
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Dribble or leakage after urination
- Sudden urge to urinate
During treatment, small amounts of steam are delivered into the enlarged prostate. When steam comes into contact with the cells that are blocking the bladder and compressing the urethra, they deteriorate and die off. The offending tissue is then gradually absorbed by the body. As this happens, symptoms of BPH decrease.
Because Rezūm uses steam and concentrates on the excess tissue causing symptoms, there are no sexual or physical side effects of treatment. Men treated with this minimally-invasive technique can return to their normal activities within two to three days. Patients can drive themselves home after treatment. Many men treated with Rezūm notice improvement in symptoms within two weeks.
Rezūm also has a low retreatment rate. A study has shown that surgical retreatment rate is 4.4% after three years. This means that the results are sustained through three years, without sexual side effects.
