What is it Like to Recover from Penile Implant Surgery?

Man using a laptop while sitting on the sofaIt is a big decision to undergo penile implant surgery. It can also be an extremely rewarding decision. To take the necessary steps to restore a satisfying intimate life, many men first need to know what to expect. As frustrating as erectile dysfunction is, a man knows what to expect from his body more or less. Undergoing surgery brings in an element of the unexpected. Here, we take some of that away by discussing what to expect during recovery from penile implant surgery.

Generally, patients are advised to plan for about two to three weeks of recovery after their penile implant procedure. The incision typically heals within days. As it does, swelling and discomfort also decrease. Dr Shridharani also recommends placement of a drain near the implant that lessens swelling, and reduces pain. Patients can increase the ease of their postoperative period by immediately beginning the care guidelines provided to them, such as scrotum elevation and ice packs (taking care to never place ice directly on the skin). Additionally, strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be strictly avoided to prevent unnecessary strain and movement.

Activating and Deactivating a Penile Implant

Patients typically do not activate their penile implant during their first two weeks of recovery. Allowing the incision and penile tissue to heal increases the comfort at the time of initial use. Sometime between 2 and 4 weeks post-op, penile implant activation may be scheduled as an office appointment. This way, the patient can receive assistance from Dr. Shridharani on proper use. After that time, patients may inflate and deflate the device daily at home to get used to the process. It can take time to gain confidence in the task of penile implant activation. The clinical staff will support you during the healing process but over the several week following the procedure it will get easier to use and provide satisfaction for sex.

One of the most common concerns that patients have is that, if they do not activate or deactivate their penile implant “correctly,” they will damage the prosthesis. This is highly unlikely. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. This adage aptly describes the process of getting acclimated to using a penile implant. Also over time, continued use and daily practice/stretching exercises may lead to subjective size gains.
