Don’t Continue to Suffer from Peyronie’s Disease (PD)

Man with urology problem visiting doctor at hospitalPD is a condition of the penis when its tissue has been damaged and abnormal healing results. Because of its sensitive nature, PD is not openly discussed by men with their doctor due to embarrassment. PD has an intense impact on sexual performance among men. Untreated PD leads to depression and even the ending of relationships.

Signs of Peyronie’s Disease

Almost ten percent (10%) of men experience PD, a condition resulting in a bent penis that cannot straighten or erect. Scar tissue – plaque – buildup causes PD.

Abnormal penile signs of PD are described as:

  • Penile curvature
  • Penile narrowing
  • Penile length loss
  • Erectile dysfunction

Men with PD are still able to have sex, but it may be painful for them and their partner. Then, erectile dysfunction usually sets in due to PD.

Symptoms of PD can develop overnight or slowly over time. PD symptoms are not obvious when the penis is soft. Hardened plaque eventually prevents penile flexibility and causes pain when the penis is forced to bend with an erection.

Cause of Peyronie’s Disease

The exact cause of PD is not exactly known. Some men suffering from PD also develop scar tissue in their hands or feet. Dupuytren’s contractures is a condition that causes scarring in the hand and feet, a similar condition as PD.

Other theories about the cause of PD are:

  • Genetics
  • Trauma or injury
  • Hitting or bending the penis can cause internal bleeding

Diagnosing and Treating Peyronie’s Disease

After assessing recent injuries or trauma to the penis, the doctor will physically feel the hardened tissue. X-rays or an ultrasound of the penis may be recommended.

Treatment options are:

  • Oral medication – pentoxifylline or potassium para-aminobenzoate (Potaba)
  • Injections – verapamil or collagenase (Xiaflex)
  • Surgery

Surgery options are:

  • Removal of plaque and grafting tissue to replace
  • Altering or removal of plaque to counter PD’s bending effect
  • Penile prosthesis implanted when PD leads to erectile dysfunction

Penile pain due to PD usually fades away after inflammation subsides.
